Portsmouth trail Sunderland 1-0 going into Thursday's second leg

Hampshire Police have arrested a man on suspicion of making threats to kill ahead of Portsmouth's home game with Sunderland on Thursday.

The 22-year-old, from North Allerton, was arrested following threats on social media about the Sky Bet League One semi-final second leg at Fratton Park.

Hampshire Police said in a statement: "A man was arrested overnight after threats were put out on social media about tonight's Portsmouth v Sunderland game at Fratton Park.

"The 22-year-old man, from North Allerton, was arrested in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of making threats to kill.

"He currently remains in custody.

"We continue to work with Portsmouth FC and can assure the public that a sufficient policing response will be in place for tonight's match."

Portsmouth will carry out enhanced security checks at Thursday's game and have asked supporters to arrive early to ensure they are in the stadium in time for kick-off.

Portsmouth trail 1-0 following Saturday's first leg at the Stadium of Light.
