The FTSE 100 closed down 11.02 points at 6995.91 and the pound was at $1.32 against the dollar.

The crisis-hit firm behind the Patisserie Valarie chain has issued a statement to say its finance director Chris Marsh was arrested by the police on Thursday evening and released on bail today. Marsh was suspended earlier this week when 'accounting irregularities' emerged.

Elsewhere, Mike Ashley's Sports Direct has snapped up the freehold to one of its flagship stores in Glasgow from £95million with a view to creating the 'Harrods of the North'.
